At a time when filmmakers relied on big stars to float their movies, Subhash Ghai cast the one film old Meenakshi Sheshadri opposite Jackie Shroff in Hero. Since then, the showman of Hindi cinema has been responsible for introducing many fresh faces that have gone on to make quite an impact in B'Town. No on can doubt Ghai's commitment to bring fresh acting talent to the fore. Unfortunately, the intention behind this production is pretty much the only thing that one can appreciate about Love Express.
The launch vehicle for a whole bunch of Whistling Woods International alumni, Love Express is amateurish from the word go. However, you're tempted to cut the team some slack since you know that this is an endeavour by freshers who are still trying to find their feet in the industry.
The 'Love' in the title is because of the two couples in the film who discover the true meaning of their relationships during the course of a 36 hour train journey, which explains the 'Express'. Kanav and Ashneet are about to be married and both their very Punjabi families have hopped aboard a train as the wedding party makes its way from Amritsar to Mumbai for the big event. Unknown to their families, both youngsters want to break off the engagement since they feel that they're not right for each other. On the other hand, former lovers Chirag and Priyanka meet by chance after a long time. Chirag builds up hopes about giving the relationship another shot, only to come crashing down when Priyanka reveals that she is in fact engaged to someone else.
Anyone who has ever travelled in a train as a part of a baraat would know that the situation throws up many opportunities for drama, comedy, gossip, romance and obviously song and dance. Credit is due to director Sunny Bhambhani for the fresh concept, but unfortunately the film doesn't capitalise on its innovative setting. The narration is hardly smooth and many scenes are abrupt and jumpy, like someone pulled the emergency chain once two often. The supporting cast members and extras seem nothing like the baraatis that they're supposed to be portraying. These caricatural characters pop up on the screen only during the song and dance sequence which takes place at an equally unconvincing location, a dining car which looks more like a an actual wedding pandal.
While neither of the two love stories manage to strike a chord, the track between Kanav and Ashneet has its moments. Chirag and Priyanka's relationship on the other hand, just gets on your nerves after a while. That is mostly due to bad characterisation, poor acting and the fact that the director insists on making Chirag speak English, even though he clearly sounds like he's being forced to do so.
Though the film is meant to be a launch pad for the four newcomers, Om Puri steals their thunder even in his limited number of scenes as Ashneet's grandfather. Of all the sequences, the ones with Puri and his on screen wife are most memorable, which is ironic since the newbies are the ones looking to make an impression on the audiences.
Sahil Mehta is the only one with any sort of screen presence and he packs in a pretty decent performance as the London based Kanav. Mannat Ravi, who plays Ashneet, uses her expressive eyes to deliver what is asked of her. Vikas Katyal (Chirag) looks like he's trying too hard and both he and Priyam Galav (Priyanka) suffer greatly due to lack of proper characterisation and engaging dialogues.
Subhash Ghai is known for his keen sense of music, but the three songs by Jaidev Kumar in Love Express are pretty formulaic. Dance like a Punjabi is the only one which stands out, but it's still not peppy enough to make you want to get up and shake a leg.
Many releases over the past few months have proved that big budgets and mega stars cannot guarantee a successful run at the box office and appreciation from the general public, but a tale well told, with real characters, emotions and situations certainly can. Unfortunately, Love Express suffers on all those counts. The youngsters seem keen to make their mark and their attempt must be lauded but is that really enough to convince audiences to buy a ticket for this rather disoriented and uninspired journey?
