Tollywood's favourite choclate boy star Siddharth whose career
graph is on a downward slope now has come up with 180 that released in Telugu and Tamil. This movie marks the re-entry of Siddharth to Tamil cinema. Ad film maker Jayendran debutes as director with this movie. The trailer teaser of this film impressed the audience thanks to its excellent cinematography. 180, released across AP and Tamilnadu today. We watched the movie today and this is what we feel about its story, technical brilliance, songs and action.
Story
Mano(Siddharth) takes a house on rent in Hyderabad. He introduces himself as a software engineer. In less than few days, he wins the good impression of Geetha and her husband who are the houseowners thanks to his helping nature. Mano helps anyone and everyone he can by selling peanuts on behalf of a kid, distributing newspaper on behalf of another kid et al. Vidya(Nitya Menen) is a photo journalist.bumps into Mano several times and is impressed with his nature. She falls in love with him and proposes to him. He immediately vacates his house. Vidya who chases his bus while he is leaving the city, meets with an accident. On the advise of the doctor, Mano takes Vidya to US for further treatment. Here Mano's pastence is revealed. He is in reality Ajay a doctor who is married to Renu(Priya Anand). But on being diagnosed with Cancer, Ajay leaves Priya by faking his death and goes of to India. The rest of the story is on whether Renu will ever get to know that her Ajay is alive and how does Vidya respond to his past.
Performances
This movie had a very limited starcast with no comedians specially hired for comedy tracks. The ones who are cast in this flick have done a commendable job including the lead actors Siddharth, Nitya and Priya Anand. Special mention is justified to Priya Anand's action which was intense, natural, convincing and adorable. Her expressions were impressive. Her body language, costumes and make up were apt and tailor made for her role. Nitya's attempt to dub for herself is worth a praise though her Telugu diction makes you laugh at times.
Actor Geetha did justice to her small role. Of the two heroines in this film, Priya Anand scores more marks not only for her action but also for her goregous looks. She didn't overdo her make up, accent or expressions anywhere in this film. Audience can't think of anyone else playing that role. As far as Nitya is concerned, though she looks cute, she seems to be still stuck in her 'Ala Modalaindi' hangover which she certainly needs to get rid off at the earliest.
Clap worthy moments
The dialogues between the house owner and Siddharth are funny and brings smile on your face. A tune of 'Naa Cheli Rojave..' from Roja is played in the backdrop when Siddharth touches Priya Anand. It evoked good response from audience.
The background score and music by Sharreth is outstanding. This is surely one of the best albums in Telugu cinema after '100% Love'. The tracks 'Ninna Leni..' and 'Nee Matalo..' are melodious. These tracks leave a soothing effect on the audience. Besides, they are well shot by cinematographer Balasubramaniam. The introduction shot where Siddharth rises from the water leaves you wide eyed.
The chemistry between Priya and Siddharth worked out well. Infact Siddharth and Priya lock lips more than once in this movie.
The visual treatment to the track 'Ee Vayasika Raadu' was a visual marvel and one of its kind in regional cinema.
Locations in US where this flick was shot were an added advantage to the exceptionally good cinematography.
The costumes and make up artistes have done a good job in choosing the right outfit for the star. Since Priya Anand is super thin, she covered it cleverly with jackets all through the film.
Cringe worthy moments
The audience in the theatre could guess the story well in advance. The fact that Siddharth will turn out to be a cancer patient was being loudly discussed in the theatre even before the story unfolded. The narration is superslow and tests your patience. The director wasted 20 minutes of screen time to show that Siddharth is agonised due to his illness. The story is very artificial and draggy. After a point audience might even doze off as similar scenes appear on screen time and again.
The director utterly failed to carry the audience with the emotion of Siddharth's pain. People couldn't connect to his agony and he was potrayed as a psychopath who is suffering from halucinations. The scene where Nitya Menen comes to Siddharth's landlord and asks if there is Amitabh Bachchan there is silly.
Barring one or two dialogues like 'Nenu Tea pedithe Coffee Laga Untundi', the others are forgettable. The repeatative potrayals of halucinations to Siddharth is sure to give you a massive headache. A scene where Siddharth fakes his death to convince his wife so that he could relieve her of the pain of living with him wasn't handled well. The dialogues in this film don't leave any impact on your mind. The biggest annoying factors in 180 are painfully boring and slow narration which takes the interest away from the movie. All the effort this film unit put in making the movie with one of the best cinematography, is taken away due to 'draggy' screenplay.
Verdict
Not a great film. Not a bad movie either. An average movie with technical brilliance. Watch it only if you have no other options.
