On the whole, Bhavnao Ko Samjho will make the people associated with it cry. Disaster! Pal’s Films’ Bhavnao Ko Samjho (UA) is about a multimillionaire businessman, Himmatlal (Dinesh Hingoo), who has a notorious and good-for-nothing unmarried son, Sunderlal (Sunil Pal), who keeps eyeing his dad’s cash.
Another son of Himmatlal and the daughter-in-law have died in a car accident. Suman (Sanghmitra), the daughter of the deceased couple, is the apple of Himmatlal’s eye. One day, Himmatlal dies.
Himmatlal has bequeathed all his wealth to Suman, leaving nothing for Sunderlal. Not just that, before his death, Himmatlal had also frozen all of Sunderlal’s bank accounts and discontinued his credit cards. Dejected, Sunderlal, along with his lawyer-friend, Babulal (Ehsaan Qureshi), approaches moneylender Dayabhai (Raju Shrivastava) for a loan of Rs. 50 lakh. Himmatlal’s will mentions that Suman’s husband would eventually be the whole and sole owner of his assets which are worth more than Rs. 1,000 crore. Therefore, Babulal and Sunderlal decide to get Suman married to someone known to him (Sunderlal) so that after the marriage, the husband would be more than willing to share the wealth with him (Sunderlal).
Meanwhile, Suman falls in love with Shekhar (Navin Prabhakar) who works as an employee in a mall and dreams of becoming rich one day. His friends advise him to get married to Suman just so that he can become rich quickly. But Shekhar ends up actually fall-ing in love with her. However, when Suman gets to know of Shekhar’s ulterior motive, which actually is no longer his motive, she breaks up with him. She is, of course, heartbroken. Unaware of uncle Sunderlal’s evil designs, Suman agrees to marry the person of his choice. Sunderlal, therefore, begins the hunt for the guy who would be willing to be a puppet in his hands. He gets in touch with Vinayak Vasudev Harne a.k.a. Vivah (Johny Lever) who runs a matrimonial agency. However, all the guys sent by Vivah are rejected by Shekhar who, now in the garb of a woman, has become Suman’s housemaid. Meanwhile, Dayabhai is after Sunderlal’s life for not having returned the loan money.
What finally happens in this game of quest for money forms the climax of the drab comedy film.
Sunil Pal’s story is silly and so ordinary and predictable that it bores the viewers. His screenplay is unbelievably ridiculous. As for his dialogues, they are rhyming lines (tukkbandi) most of the times, written to make people laugh, but they hardly achieve their goal. Getting 51 stand-up comedians together and making them scream and shout their lungs out endlessly is not what comedy means, but that’s what Sunil Pal probably felt when he set out to write the script.
As if his script weren’t bad enough, Sunil Pal also irritates in the acting department. He overacts to the hilt. Ehsaan Qureshi gets on the viewers’ nerves. Navin Prabhakar is definetly not hero material. His acting is alright. Raju Shrivastava is his usual funny self but he offers nothing new or different from what he gives the public on television. Sanghmitra does show some confidence. It is a pity to watch Johny Lever do inane comedy like in this film. Dinesh Hingoo is okay. Khayali, Kapil Sharma, Gurpreet Guggi, Sambhavna Seth, Rauf Lala and the others add to the audience’s woes by coming up with poor performances.
Sunil Pal’s direction is amateurish. The film looks like a series of ‘Laughter Challenge’ episodes of the small screen, pieced together with a childish story running in the background. Music (by Dinu-Tinu) is ordinary except for one song, ‘Tumse nazar mili’, which is at least melodious. Song picturisations are extremely poor. Shailesh Awasthi’s cinematography gives the film a dull look. C.B. More’s sets are not worth a mention.
On the whole, Bhavnao Ko Samjho will make the people associated with it cry. Disaster!
