Watch Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011) Movie Online

Though it's been touted as something of an 'anti-romantic' comedy, for most of the first half, Pyaar Ka Punchnama follows a rather typical rom-com line in its proceedings. Still, with a host of newcomers in starring roles and virtually no starpower to boast of, the film proves to be surprisingly worth the watch.

Luv Ranjan's directorial debut, Pyaar Ka Punchnama works primarily because its comedy works right, the witty potshots finding their targets with ease. Targeted at the younger, more hep members of the audience,
the film is a contemporary, almost sarcastic take on love and relationships in modern times. Though the film's title may lead to comparisons with another recently released rom-com, Luv Ka The End, the plot has more in common with the earlier, Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji.

The film is centered on three best friends, Rajat, Chaudhary and Liquid, who live together. The break-out character amongst the three is Liquid, a spectacled, foul-mouthed nerd with temper issues, who seems to have an opinion on anything and everything. The three have a unique take on women, love and relationships. The trio is tested when each finds a woman they fall head-over-heels in love with. While Rajat finds Neha, who makes him move in with her, Chaudhary finds the beautiful Ria, who seems a bit too 'friendly' with everyone, and is still stringing along her ex of five years. Liquid, on his part, falls for a pretty new co-worker Charu, who keeps giving him mixed signals even as she carries on a long distance relationship with her boyfriend.

Keeping in line with the film's focus on the more disastrous paybacks from love and relationships, the women in the movie are uniformly shrewish, almost bordering on evil. While Neha manipulates Rajat into doing her bidding every time, Charu tongue-lashes Liquid whenever she feels like it. Though it may seem one-dimensional, the character sketches of the girls are used as the perfect comic fodder for the guys here, best demonstrated in a humongous five-minute long rant about the guy-girl equation that a harassed Rajat embarks on once he's had enough of Neha, a monologue that is bound to have the male members of the audience in splits even as they nod along in agreement with everything he says.

The mental state of the guys, who go from being babbar shers, as they call themselves, to being trained pups for the girls, is also made clear in the side-splitting, whimpering dog sounds that are played every time they acquiesce to the women's various demands, as well as in the song kutta that sees Mika explain it all.

Still, the film's core story doesn't have much aside from comic meat to it, and once the turmoil takes firm hold in the second half and the guys get started with the weepies, one can't help but feel like the film is dragging. The final resolution of the film also lacks bite; while Rajat and Neha's relationship has a scrumptiously satisfying conclusion, the other two tracks are left hanging in thin air, without a definite end. Given that the girls are cast as stand-in villains, one feels a bit letdown that Ria and Charu don't quite get their just desserts, especially the latter, since one hopes that the brash Liquid will find his tongue as the end of it all. Alas, he never does.

The end apart, Pyaar Ka Punchnama still deserves a watch for its performances, for those of Divyendu as Liquid and Nushrat Bharucha as Neha. While Divyendu emerges as the clear star here as the mercurial Liquid, Nushrat plays the petulant and nagging Neha to perfection. The others, though, are okay. Raayo Bhakirta, as Chaudhary, seems to be cast as an underwear model here, given that that is his attire of choice for the most part here. Though he has a great deal of screen presence, his acting skills could use some polish. The same goes for Ishita, who plays Charu, who acts fair, but could do better. Kartik who is cast as the harried Rajat, has his babyface looks going for him, but doesn't quite come into his own as an actor until the second half. Still, his comic moments pre-interval, when he is mollycoddling Neha, are quite hilarious. Sonalli Sehgal as Ria, however, is the weak link, being just a pretty face with no real acting chops, and is appropriately, the least used of the toplining actors in the film.

The music of the film is just about okay, with kutta being the only real stand-out track for the way it's used in the film. Incidentally, though the soundtrack has mostly been composed by Hitesh Sonik and Clinton Cerejo, that one track, which sees Mika on vocals, has been written and composed by director Luv Ranjan himself.

While it doesn't etch out a particularly fresh new story, Pyaar Ka Punchnama definitely has its moments; quite a few of them, in fact. With some great performances, perhaps the film is an indication that B'town doesn't need big name stars to make viable cinema anymore. Though it does dull down towards the second half, Luv Ranjan's premier effort is definitely worth a watch. Indeed, Pyaar Ka Punchnama packs quite a comic punch.
